What Is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a very rare form of cancer. It is caused from breathing in asbestos, which is a naturally occurring silicate material. The most common type of mesothelioma is pleural mesothelioma, which begins in the thoracic cavity. If asbestos is inhaled or ingested, it can get stuck on tissues and later develop into tumors which develop into cancer.

Mesothelioma has a long latency period, meaning it can take decades for symptoms to develop and the cancer to actually get diagnosed. There are four stages of mesothelioma. Stage one is in specific areas of the body, meaning that it is localized and surgery can be utilized. Stage one is also split up into two substages; Stage 1A and 1B. Stage two occurs when the cancer spreads to nearby organs, but still stays on one side of the body. Surgery is still an option in this stage. During state three, the cancer has spread to other tissues and organs and there are less treatment options available. Stage three is split up into two subcategories; stage 3A and 3B. With stage four mesothelioma, the cancer has spread to other parts of the body and there are very limited treatment options. At this stage, palliative care is used most often.
