The Dangers of Asbestos In Philadelphia Schools

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA- Asbestos contamination in schools has become more and more of a problem in the Philadelphia area. In fact, there have been six school closings this year due to asbestos contamination, with two of them in April alone. Asbestos is a naturally occurring silicate material that can become airborne and is extremely harmful to breathe in, leading to greater risk of the cancer mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer due to exposure to asbestos and is considered to be fatal. In Philadelphia schools asbestos is a major issue, with over 2,300 abatements over the past several years. Abatements are the only way to safely get rid of asbestos, by controlling the release of the fibers from asbestos-containing materials.

One of the closures occurred when asbestos was found in material that for decades was labeled as “non-asbestos containing.” This exposure is very harmful to children and teachers and can lead to Mesothelioma later in life. Recently inspectors have discovered that asbestos was used in the plaster when building schools in the Philadelphia area. In fact, 295 schools out of the 321 schools in Philadelphia have asbestos containing materials- a shocking statistic.

Data showing abatement projects in Philadelphia schools since 2016 shows that there have been thousands of abatements over the past several years, proving that asbestos was used heavily in building materials. Some of the most projects took place at Frankford High School with 34 projects, North East High School with 27 projects and the Laura H. Cornell School with 25 projects. Hopefully, these projects make schools safer and allow students to attend school without being put at such a health risk.
