Andrew Balcer, Attorney at the Halpern Law Firm, became a lawyer in 2008. He was born and raised in a blue collar steel town, home to multiple steel mills. Steel mills are known to have asbestos-containing materials and interestingly enough Andy ended up becoming a lawyer working on asbestos-related cases. Andy attended St. Louis University for Law School where he played Division I tennis and ended up becoming an assistant tennis coach. His education prepared him well for his future career in law.
I sat down and asked Andy a few questions about his career and why he does what he does. I wanted to learn more about what makes him good at this line of work and what makes it gratifying to work on the cases that he works on. Andy explained to me that he has been working on mesothelioma cases virtually his entire career, beginning in 2009. His first job out of law school was working on asbestos-related cases. This being the case, Andy is very knowledgeable about the topic, knowing the ins and outs of the industry and a lot of the companies that put workers at risk of asbestos exposure due to their negligence. Andy joined the Halpern Law Firm in August of 2022 and has been here for close to a year.
When I asked Andy why he likes working at the Halpern Law Firm, he explained to me, “Representing workers and their families. It is very meaningful for me to represent people and their families who are genuinely hurt by the wrongful acts of big companies.” Based on this answer alone, I could tell that Andy is really passionate about what he does and genuinely cares about victims of mesothelioma and wants to fight for them to get the justice and compensation that they deserve.
Andy told me that he likes knowing that he is on the right side of things by helping the victims of this aggressive cancer. He shared that he is “dedicated to the families and being able to represent actual people.” He enjoys working for a firm that is dedicated to one thing and one thing only, which is asbestos-related cases. This separates the Halpern Law Firm from other law firms, as our firm is singularly focused and is dedicated to helping those diagnosed with mesothelioma in Pennsylvania. All of the attorneys at the Halpern Law Firm are dedicated to one thing and they all have a common goal: to help our clients.
Despite it being rewarding, working on mesothelioma cases is very challenging as well. It is emotionally difficult working with clients that are extremely ill and that are in poor physical condition. Andy feels for all the victims, saying “you share in a small part of their pain and suffering.” This makes him want to fight for the clients and do the best he can to get them compensation.
Some mesothelioma victims may not know how to seek legal help or where to start. This is a simple answer for Andy: Call the Halpern Law Firm. At the Halpern Law Firm we are dedicated to our clients and care about each and every one of them. It is important to speak to a doctor and to get tests done in order for the disease to be detected as early as possible, so the best possible treatment is available.
Some people who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease may be hesitant to seek legal help. I asked Andy why patients should seek compensation. He explained to me that there are a variety of reasons why mesothelioma victims should do so. One of the reasons is that the client and their families are being punished for the wrongful acts of asbestos companies and they have to pay the price for the negligence of companies over the years. Andy said that “without victims coming forth and seeking compensation these companies will only do it again.”
