Main Line Health has five hospitals, six health centers and has been ranked among the region’s best hospitals. Residents of PA have the option to go to a Main Line Health Hospital around the Philadelphia area. U.S. News and World Report ranked Main Line Health Hospitals very high for 2022 and 2023. Bryn Mawr Hospital was ranked #13 in Pennsylvania, Paoli Hospital was ranked #11 in Pennsylvania and Lankenau Medical Center was ranked #6 in Pennsylvania. Those diagnosed with mesothelioma or other asbestos-related diseases such as lung cancer can be treated at one of the Main Line Health Center’s hospitals.
Lankenau Medical Center “is committed to maintaining high-level expertise across all clinical areas… Our surgeons, medical doctors, nurses, researchers and other clinicians are consistently recognized for providing outstanding care.” Lankenau Medical Center provides specialty care in pulmonology. Pulmonology is a medical specialty dealing with the respiratory system. Pulmonologists specialize in treating diseases of the lungs and other organs that help people breathe. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of mesothelioma, and it begins in the thoracic cavity, or the lining of the lungs. It affects about 75% of all mesothelioma patients. Therefore, those with pleural mesothelioma can look into being treated at the Lankenau Medical Center.
Main Line Health offers different tests to determine if a patient has mesothelioma. These tests include a biopsy, CT scan, X-ray and blood tests. The four main types of needle biopsies performed include a fine needle biopsy, a core needle biopsy, an image-guided biopsy and a vacuum-assisted biopsy. CT scans can be used to detect malignant cancers in the body, such as mesothelioma, and can be used to determine reasons for chest pains, which are a symptom of pleural mesothelioma. During a CT scan the patient is asked to lie still and hold their breath, while an x-ray beam travels around the patient and takes pictures of the body. Blood tests are normally done by administering a needle in the arm.
After tests are completed, if a patient is diagnosed with mesothelioma, their doctor will go over treatment options. The most common treatments for mesothelioma include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, but the type of treatment depends on the overall health of the patient as well as the stage of cancer the patient is going through. Chemotherapy is normally administered through a tube that is placed in the vein and it is used to treat almost every type of cancer. Sessions can last between two and ten hours and there are some common side effects including nausea and hair loss. Radiation therapy occurs when high-energy radiation is used to kill or shrink the mesothelioma cancer cells.
Main Line Health also has a Lung Cancer Program. Physicians use a CT scan to check for lung cancer. Lung cancer screenings are available at eight Main Line Health locations. Many treatments are offered, including radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery. Nurse navigators are also assigned to patients to provide them with information about their treatment and answer any questions the patient might have. They also help patients find social workers, support groups and financial advisers. The Main Line Health Center’s philosophy is to “treat the whole person, to ensure a healthy mind, body and spirit.”
