Support Groups for Mesothelioma Patients and Caregivers

Upon receiving a mesothelioma diagnosis, you might feel scared and isolated. It is useful to join a support group with those going through a similar experience as you. There are multiple support groups that are out there for mesothelioma victims.

Support Groups

Living With Lung Disease is an online support group for those who have lung diseases and infections. Better Breathers Club is a virtual or in person support group where people can “connect to education, support and each other through in-person and virtual support groups.” This club has been in existence for over 50 years and has helped people living with lung disease all throughout the country.

Included in Better Breathers Club meetings are guest speakers, problem-solving discussions, and social activities. There are many Better Breathers Club locations throughout Pennsylvania. In Bloomsburg, PA at the Geisinger-Bloomsburg Hospital, the club meets on the first Tuesday of each month. In Erie, PA, at Sterling Square, there is a meeting on the third Friday of each month. In Philadelphia, at the Jane and Leonard Korman Lung Institute, there are meetings on the last Tuesday of each month, and in Pittsburgh, PA there are meetings on Tuesdays. These are just some of the locations throughout the state of Pennsylvania.

The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation

The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation also hosts support groups for mesothelioma patients, caregivers, and the bereaved. Groups take place via Zoom, Facebook, or in person at the Research Foundation’s conferences. There are Zoom meetings every month and patients and caregivers alike can connect to others through the Facebook groups at any time. For instance, this month alone there are three separate meetings. On December 11th there was a Stronger Together Meet-Up for mesothelioma patients via Zoom. On the 12th, there is a Circle of Support Group for Caregivers, and on December 21st, there is “Moving forward with loss – the challenges facing younger widows and widowers” Zoom group and a Professionally Moderated Support Group for patients.

Facebook Support Groups

There are many Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation Facebook support groups. These include Mesothelioma Loss Support Group, Mesothelioma Straight Talk: General Discussion, Mesothelioma Straight Talk: Patient Support, Mesothelioma Straight Talk: Caregivers – Early Disease, and Mesothelioma Straight Talk: Caregivers: Advanced Disease.

The Mesothelioma Loss Support Group is for anyone and everyone who has lost a loved one to mesothelioma. It can be very difficult dealing with such a loss. If you have lost a family member or a friend to mesothelioma it may be beneficial to connect with others who have as well and to share stories.

The Mesothelioma Straight Talk: General Discussion Group is for all members of the mesothelioma community; patients and caregivers alike, to ask questions, discuss topics that may be of interest or concern to them, and to just generally connect.

The Mesothelioma Straight Talk: Patient Support group is for those who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma to connect with others who have also been diagnosed. It is a private room that can be used to share wins and to discuss difficult times.

The Mesothelioma Straight Talk: Caregivers – Early Disease group is for caregivers of those with mesothelioma who are in the early stages of the disease, who have hope as a focus.

Lastly, the Mesothelioma Straight Talk: Caregivers – Advanced Disease group is for caregivers of patients who are in the advanced disease of their cancer. This group places an emphasis on symptom management and treatment.

In general, it can be very useful for patients and caregivers to join mesothelioma support groups to connect with others and share personal stories, trials, and tribulations.
