The USS Albany was a United States Navy ship that was commissioned in the 1940s. Asbestos exposure on the USS Albany was very common as the carcinogen was used throughout the ship and almost all US Navy ships. In fact, US Navy veterans account for about 30% of all mesothelioma cases. Asbestos-related diseases that can result from asbestos exposure on Navy ships include, but are not limited to:
- Mesothelioma
- Lung Cancer
- Asbestosis
- Colon cancer
About the USS Albany
The USS Albany was commissioned in 1946, making voyages until it was decommissioned for the last time in 1980. During the time of its commission, asbestos was regularly used in Navy ships in many different places, including as an insulation material on the pipes that ran throughout the ships. The USS Albany originally operated in the Atlantic and later in the Mediterranean Sea and South America. Asbestos exposure on the USS Albany would have been common for those who were boilermakers/technicians, and virtually anyone that would have been on the ship.
Mesothelioma along with other asbestos-related diseases have what is known as a latency period. This means that symptoms do not usually occur until decades after exposure to asbestos and sometimes take as long as 60 years to develop. Common symptoms of mesothelioma include:
- Cough
- Shortness of breath
- Weight loss
Asbestos Exposure on the USS Albany Through Products
Many products throughout the ship contained asbestos, including:
- Adhesives
- Cables
- Gaskets
- Pipe insulation
- Pumps
- Valves
If you served in the United States Navy on the USS Albany or another naval ship and have been diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease, you could be entitled to compensation. It is important to note that the US Navy would not be sued during the process. Defendants in the case could potentially be manufacturers of the asbestos products that were used throughout the ship.
How to Receive Compensation
There are a variety of ways to receive compensation for an asbestos-related disease diagnosis if the source of exposure can be traced back to your military service. Those who receive a diagnosis can also pursue compensation without filing a lawsuit. If you experienced asbestos exposure on the USS Albany you may also be entitled to compensation through the Department of Veterans Affairs. To be eligible for disability compensation through the Veterans Affairs (VA) there must be a condition that was caused by asbestos exposure and there must be contact with asbestos while serving in the military. The VA requires documents including medical records, service records, and a statement from a doctor.
