Pennsylvania recently endowed a grant of $75 million to schools across the state to aid in the removal of asbestos and mold in school buildings. The Lancaster School District is one such area that will benefit from this.
The grant is in response to several lawsuits presented against the Philadelphia School District. Specifically, Frankford High School has brought light to the issue of public safety in schools. Upon the discovery of asbestos at Frankford High, surrounding Pennsylvania school districts, including Lancaster, began testing their buildings more aggressively for asbestos. Due to asbestos exposures at school, a teacher who was employed at a Pennsylvania high school was diagnosed with mesothelioma.
Lancaster schools that have been affected by asbestos and mold contamination will be awarded funds from the grant for removal and other operational expenses.
Asbestos is a natural mineral that is known to cause cancers such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis, and more. It is used as a reinforcing and fire-proofing agent in many industries, including steel mills, auto repair shops, firehouses, and more. Symptoms of asbestos exposure include:
- Shortness of breath
- Difficulty breathing
- Hoarseness
- Fatigue
- And more
The grant is a large step towards protecting public health. Teachers, administration, students, parents, and maintenance workers deserve to breathe safe air in classrooms and other public buildings. Lancaster schools will benefit from having a cleaner environment for students to learn in.
