Talc and Asbestos

Date: August 9, 2024

Key takeaways:

  • talc and asbestos are mined closely, meaning there is a high possibility of cross contamination
  • talc is used in many cosmetic products, baby powder, and building materials
  • companies like Johnson & Johnson, Chanel, and Claire’s are known to have exposed consumers to asbestos-infected talc
  • the inhalation of asbestos can lead to mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis

There is an established history between talc and asbestos. Large companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Claire’s, and even Chanel are known to have traces of asbestos in their products. Talc and asbestos are mined closely to each other, so it is very easy for asbestos fibers to get mixed in with the talc. Since asbestos fibers are microscopic, it is impossible to see with the naked eye and is even difficult to determine with testing since the fibers are within the talc.

Johnson & Johnson

An investigation conducted by Reuters has exposed Johnson & Johnson’s use of talc in their baby powder products. Although the company repeatedly denied the presence of asbestos in their powder, testing done by Reuters found a substantial amount of it. J&J actively hid the asbestos, eventually leading to severe health issues of some of those who consumed their products. Reuters found documents that J&J hid during a lawsuit that showed different labs found high levels of asbestos in their talc.

Protecting Consumers

Holding companies responsible for their mining practices is the first step in creating a safer consumer environment. Companies like J&J and cosmetic companies must be vigilant in their testing. Laws should be passed to ensure potentially dangerous substances are tested so they are safe to use. According to Reuters, J&J tests their talc for asbestos, but only a small amount. This practice has exposed babies and their caretakers to a deadly carcinogen.
